Craft of the Day, felt hearts

Ja då var det dags för fler hjärtan. 🙂 Jag gillar rött och vitt i granen och då kommer dessa filthjärtan förhoppningsvis passa bra. Jag hade vit filt över efter marängerna och hus-ljuslyktorna. Dessa hjärtan är enkla att göra. Du behöver vit filt, sax, sytråd (eller broderitråd), nål och ett band att hänga hjärtat i.

För att måtta hjärtana kan man använda en pepparkaksform till exempel, eller rita för hand. Klipp ut två hjärtan. Sy runt kanten med langettstygn men spara en liten öppning. Fyll med vadd och sy igen det sista. Fäst ett band för upphängning.

It’s about time for some new hearts. 🙂 I like the combination of red and white in the Christmas tree and these felt hearts will hopefully fit right in. I had some scraps of white felt left from the meringues and the felt house lanterns.The hearts are really easy to make. You need white felt, scissors, sewing thread (or embroidery thread), a needle and string or yarn for the hanging. 

In order to get the right heart shape, you can use a cookie cutter, or simply draw by hand. Cut out two hearts. Sew around the edge with blanket stitch, but leave a small opening. Fill the heart with cotton wool and close the gap. Attach a string for hanging.

Craft of the Day, braided hearts

Flätade hjärtan är ett typiskt julpyssel i vår familj. Ladda ner min mall genom att klicka på denna länk eller på bilden. Klipp ut mallen. Vik det papper du valt dubbelt. Lägg mallen på papperet. Den streckade kanten på mallen ska ligga mot pappersviket. Rita runt mallen och klipp ut. Du behöver två likadana “hjärthalvor”, gärna i kontrasterande färg eller olika mönster.

Om du aldrig har flätat hjärtan förut så föreslår jag att du börjar med en “dummy” i vanligt kopieringspapper och skriver siffrorna 1-3 på den ena halvan och bokstäverna A-C på den andra, som på min bild.

Börja med 3:
Trä 3 över C, genom B och över A (som på bilderna nedan).
Nu är dags för nr 2:
Trä 2 genom C, över B och genom A.
Och slutligen 3: 
Trä 3 över C, genom B och över A.
Nu ska hjärtat gå att öppna som en korg.
Klistra eller tejpa fast handtaget. Klart!

      

Braided hearts is a typical Christmas craft in our family. Download my template by clicking on this link. Cut out the template. Fold the paper of your choice. Place the template on the paper. The dashed line on the template must align against the paper folding. Trace around the template with a pen and cut. You need two identical “half hearts”, preferably in a contrasting color or different patterns. 

If you’ve never braided hearts before I suggest you start with a “dummy” in plain copy paper and mark one half with the numbers 1-3 and the other one with the letters A-C, like in my picture.

Start with no 3:
Thread 3 over C, through B and over A (as shown in my pictures above)
Now it’s time for no 2:
Thread 2 through C, over B and through A.
And finally, no 3:
Thread 3 over C, through B and over A.

Now you should be able to open the heart like a basket. 
Glue or tape the handle in place. You’re done!

Craft of the Day, felt houses

Jag tror det var via Pinterest eller Craftgawker som jag hamnade på pysselbloggen Poopscape Projecets och fastnade direkt för Claires små fina filthus. Det är något speciellt med hus. Materialet till filthusen hade jag redan hemma så härom kvällen satte jag fart.

Inspiration, beskrivning och mall kommer som sagt från Poopscape Projects men istället för att pensla på tygstärkelse på de färdiga husen så strök jag på vliseline (min nya favorit, det är så roligt att jobba med!) innan jag ens skar ut husformerna. Fungerade perfekt, husen blev hur stabila som helst.

Det enda man behöver är alltså: Vit filt, vliseline (eller tygstärkelse + pensel), hobbykniv, skärmatta eller annat bra underlag, linjal, vit sytråd, nål och strykjärn. Och elektriska värmeljus om man vill kunna “tända” dem. Använd absolut inte vanliga värmeljus (det behöver jag inte ens skriva va?).

I think it was through Pinterest or Craft Rest or Craftgawker that I ended up on the craft blog Poopscape Projects, and immediately got hooked on Claire’s neat felt houses. There’s something special about houses. I had all the necessary material available to make the felt houses at home and got started the other evening. 

As mentioned, the inspiration for this craft comes from Poopscape Projects and there you can find a great tutorial and a template. Instead of applying fabric stiffener I used fusible interfacing (my new favorite, it’s so fun and easy to work with!) before even cutting out the house shapes. Worked perfectly, the houses became very stabile. 

All you need is this: White felt, fusible interfacing (or fabric stiffener + brush), exacto knife, cutting mat, ruler, white sewing thread, a needle and an iron. And electric tea lights if you want to “light” your houses. Please never use ordinary tea lights (I don’t even have to point that out to you, do I?). 

   

Ljushållaren med stadsmotiv som står i bakgrunden kommer från butiken Village, men den har ett par år på nacken.

Man kan ju också tänka sig sy ett litet golv på dem, trä i ett snöre och hänga dem i julgranen…

The “city” candle holder in the background comes from a chain of stores called Village here in Sweden, and I’ve had it for a couple of years. 

Another idea could be to add a floor to the house, attach a string and hang it the Christmas tree …

Craft of the Day, snow globe

Jag har sett tips på hur man gör egna snöglober lite här och var på nätet och i inredningstidningar. Det verkade som ett relativt enkelt projekt och mina tjejer var entusiastiska. Vi gjorde ett försök.

Det här behöver du: 
– Glasburkar
– Glitter, fusksnö eller paljetter
– Lim (icke vattenlösligt)
– Tygband eller snygg tejp
– Glycerol
– Vatten som kokats upp och svalnat
– Figurer som tål vatten

Gör så här:
– Koka upp vatten, låt svalna.
– Ta bort eventuella gamla etiketter på burkarna (aceton kan hjälpa mot klisterresterna).
– Limma dina figurer på locket, låt torka.
– Fyll burkarna det avsvalnade vattnet, nästan ända upp till kanten.
– Droppa i lite glycerol (en tsk ca) och häll på glitter.
– Sätt en sträng med lim på insidan av burken, längst kanten.
– Skruva på locket. Skaka burken och se resultatet.

Tips: 
– Se verkligen till att använda icke vattenlösligt lim!
– Ha gott om tid. Låt vattnet svalna och låt klistret torka ordentligt. Annars kommer figurerna lossna så småningom när man skakar… Våra första två försök blev bra, när vi skulle göra fler misslyckades vi. Fel sorts klister den gången plus att figurerna tålde inte vattnet.
– Det är snyggare med låga burkar om dina figurer inte är så höga.

    

I have seen a lot of different ideas on how to make your own snow globes. It seemed like a pretty simple project and my girls were enthusiastic. We gave it a try.

What you need:
– Glass Jars
– Glitter, sequins or synthetical snow
– Glue / Epoxy (water resistant)
– Fabric ribbon or pretty tape
– Glycerol
– Water (boiled and cooled)
– Figurines that can withstand water

Do like this:
– Boil water, let it cool.
– Remove any old labels on the cans (nail polish remover can help with sticky residue).
– Glue your figurines on the lid, allow to dry.
– Fill the jars with the cooled water, almost up to the edge.
– Add some glycerine (one teaspoon approx) and add the glitter.
– Place glue on the inside edge of the jar.
– Screw on the lid. Shake the jar and see the result.

Tips & tricks:
– Be sure to use non-water soluble glue/epoxy! 😉
– Have plenty of time. Be sure to let the water cool down and let the glue dry properly. Otherwise, the figurines will come off eventually when shaken rigorously … Our first two attempts were successful, but when we made two more we failed. We used bad glue that time plus the fact that the figures weren’t waterproof. 
– If your figures are small, it will look better if you use a low jar.

Craft of the Day, chandelier wreath

I vår vinterträdgård hänger en ljuskrona (från Ikea) och en jul, för ett par år sedan, pyntade jag den med granris och pepparkakor. Pepparkakorna köpte jag färdigbakade och garnerade själv med kristyr och silverkulor (strössel). Trevlig första advent allesammans!

In our conservatory hangs a chandelier (from Ikea) and one Christmas, a couple of years ago, I decorated it with pine boughs and gingerbread. I bought the gingerbreads pre-baked and garnished myself with icing and silver ball sprinklers. Today we celebrate the first out of four advents before Christmas. So happy First Sunday Advent everyone!

Om man kan baka hjärtformade kanelbullar så borde man väl även kunna baka hjärtformade lussebullar, tänkte jag. Och det gick ju alldeles utmärkt. 🙂

I figured that if you can bake heart-shaped cinnamon rolls then you probably can bake heart-shaped saffron buns as well. And it worked! 🙂

Craft of the Day, gingerbread house

Jag skulle vilja vara duktig på att göra fina pepparkakshus men det är jag inte. Jag har alldeles för dåligt tålamod. Jag bränner mig på det smälta sockret och jag svär högt när sockret hinner stelna innan bitarna sitter på plats ordentligt och till sist brukar allt bara rasa ihop i en enda stor hög (inklusive jag själv). 😉

Det här kändes som ett projekt mer i min smak, miniatyr-pepparkakshus. Formarna köpte jag på Åhléns. Degen köpte jag färdig. Meningen var att man skulle kunna sätta husen på kanten av en mugg (enligt beskrivningen). Jag lyckades inte få mina att sitta stabilt på någon muggkant men jag tycker nog att de blev ganska söta ändå. Och jag har knappt svurit en enda gång…

Jag fick proffshjälp med att baka vanliga pepparkakor också… /

Vi vuxna valde glögg istället för mjölk. /
Us adults chose mulled wine instead of milk. 

I would love to master the art of making beautiful gingerbread houses, but I don’t. I have way too little patience. I burn myself on the melted sugar and I swear out loud when the sugar harden before the pieces properly are in place. Eventually everything just collapses into one big pile (including myself). 😉 

This seemed like a more suitable project for me, miniature gingerbread houses. I bought the molds at Åhléns (a Swedish retail chain) and the gingerbread dough was ready made. The idea was to place the finished houses on the edge of a mug (according to the description that followed) but I couldn’t get mine to sit firmly. But I do think they turned out pretty nice anyway. And I almost managed to keep from swearing …
